A Sunset in Sedona
Sedona is a place of absolute beauty, with breathtaking landscapes, endless night skies, and spiritual tranquility. It is also known for unforgettable sunsets. In my quest to find the best sunset location, I have found nothing compares to Sugarloaf Loop Trail.
Sugarloaf is classified as an easy trail with a loop distance of 1.9 miles. It has a small elevation gain of about 354 feet, as you make your way to the final viewing point. What won me over about this spot was the lack of crowd, its ease, and 360-degree unobstructed scenic views. Bell Rock, Airport Mesa, Chimney Rock, and even Jerome are visible from this stunning trail. Most notably, during golden hour you will be immersed in the backdrop of the illuminated sandstone, an experience that is difficult to describe in words. A lot of the magic happens once the sun dips completely behind the mountains, even more so when there are clouds in the sky. My recommendation is to stay and savor the moment if you have the time.
To locate Sugarloaf Loop Trail search Tea Cup Trailhead in your phones' GPS. Both trails start from the same location, a small parking lot off Buena Vista Drive. (If you search Sugarloaf Loop it will pin a spot in the middle of the trail). You can also download the All Trails app, it’s free, and it provides an abundance of trail and hike information. It can also be used as a GPS while you hike if you keep the app open. The parking lot for this trailhead is very small so prepare accordingly. Since most of the trails and vista points in Sedona are situated on national forest land a parking pass is required. Passes can be purchased online or picked up at a local convenience store or other outlets. The cost of a day pass is $5.00, $15.00 weekly, or $20.00 annually. See the links below for more information about the trail and how to purchase your parking pass.
Lastly, if you are taking this sunset hike be aware that when you return you will be hiking in darker conditions so bring a good flashlight or two so you can find your way back with ease. I hope you enjoy it!
